VFW POST 3137
THE POST ON THE COAST

September 2008 Newsletter

Comrades and friends of the Post 3137, Isle of Palms, South Carolina, this is the first newsletter that I've put together since accepting the position of Commander in July. I will attempt to put these out at least every 2 months or whenever events warrant. I welcome any comments/suggestions for future newsletters.

NEW OFFICERS:
Due to the unexpected departure of Commander Myers in July, POST 3137 held an election at the August monthly meeting to fill the vacancies. The new elected officers:
Commander: Darrin Voke
Senior Vice Commander: Jerry Taylor ("JT")
Junior Vice Commander: Larry Cook

ANNUAL VFW LUAU:
WOW - What a great time!! The Ladies Auxiliary once again put together a great party on August 23rd, with the Shakin' Martini's giving us a great show! If you weren't able to make it, you missed a GREAT time - great food, great music and even some of the people were great (just kidding about the people - HA!). Of course, we had a lot of our regulars there, some new faces, and I was lucky enough to meet Mike and Sharon Solei (and daughter) who were visiting from Minnesota! How lucky they were to be in town for the Luau - great timing! I look forward to seeing them again on their next trip to the Post on the Coast!

NEW FACES:
We often talk amongst ourselves/regulars, not taking the time to introduce ourselves to anyone new that walks in; I encourage everyone to make the effort to introduce yourself, and make a new person feel welcome (each and everyone one of us was a 'new face' at some point in time!). Some folks are simply passing through, and others are potential future members of our post; we want them all to walk out of our post with a positive experience.
Along those lines, I was fortunate to meet a couple young men at our Post last weekend that have more recently served overseas. One was shot through his leg during his 3rd Tour in Iraq, and the other is a Navy SEAL. These two came into our Post separately on the same day, but were quickly sharing stories of their experiences with one another. Men of this stature are the future of the VFW; we are accountable to make them feel welcome; it's the least we can do, considering what they are doing for us.

SICK CALL:
Jimmy Woods is in the VA Hospital, and it appears to be cancer. I will not list specifics in this newsletter, but please keep Jimmy, Virginia and their family in your thoughts and prayers. I really missed seeing Jimmy and Virginia dancing to the Shakin' Martini's at the Luau last weekend, just like they did the last time the band was here.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Every Wednesday and Friday from 6pm to 8pm:
Wednesday night is Spaghetti, including salad and bread!!
Friday night is Burn Your Own Steak Night with baked potato and salad!!

ANNUAL VFW GOLF TOURNAMENT:
September 28th at Wild Dunes Harbor Course for $75 per person. Thanks to Mr. Mingo for managing this tournament!! Please sign up on the roster near the bar, and have payment made by September 10th. This is a deal for $75: Golf on a resort course, food, drinks, and prizes! I'll see you there!!

THIS N THAT'S:
I want to say "Thanks!" again to the Ladies Auxiliary for the work they do. Anytime they put together a function such as the Annual Luau, it is an event to mark your calendar for - they truly do an outstanding job. An event such as this is not easy to coordinate, but they make it appear to be.

I want to say "Thanks!" to Jesse Atkins for volunteering his time to repair the cables outside of our Post (the cable wire's that you see swinging in the wind as you walk the sidewalk toward our front door). Jesse was not asked to do this; he asked if the Post would pay for the parts to do the repairs, if he were to volunteer his time. If we can only get the weather to cooperate, Jesse will take care of this for us!

I want to say "Thank You" to all who have volunteered time and effort to make VFW Post 3137 a friendly post for all to enjoy, and a valuable entity to support and service our troops and Veterans.

We ask that God watch over all of our troops, our members, their families, and all veterans, especially those that have been disabled while performing their duties of great sacrifice to maintain our freedom and precious way of life.

Our next scheduled monthly meeting is on September 8th 2008.
