VFW POST 3137
THE POST ON THE COAST
Newsletter 2008-01, May 14, 2008
Comrades and friends of the Post 3137, Isle of Palms, South Carolina, it has been awhile since we have provided a newsletter and I want to catch you up on some of the past achievements and going-ons and also let you know of what is planned for the near future.
NEW OFFICERS:
Nominations and elections of the Post's Officers were held in April and the following have been installed for this next year's term:
| Commander: | Richard Myers |
| Quartermaster: | Bo Stallings |
| Sr. Vice Commander: | Larry Cook |
| Jr. Vice Commander | Darrin Volk |
| Chaplain: | Bob Hooper |
| Adjutant | Darrin Volk |
| Surgeon | Vic Lorath |
RENOVATIONS:
Our kitchen has been completely renovated with new equipment; refrigerators/freezers, stove, dishwasher, cabinets, flooring, sinks and beautiful paint. The products were purchased through the Art
Rupert Fund. This was accomplished through the hard work of numerous individuals who donated their time, expertise and the usual bruises, cut and abrasions. I want to thank all of those that "chipped in" and made this happen. We also received new equipment in the kitchen through the donations of Vic Lorath (microwave) and Mike Landrum (professional service bar). Take a tour- it is nice!
The men's bathroom has been spruced up with new flooring and a well needed paint job. Kudos' go out to Bo Stallings for his efforts and drive for completion and our resident decorator/painter Bill Matis. I guess you ladies will have to take my word for this- well, at least knock first if you must see for yourselves.
The downstairs "banquet" area has also been renovated- sidings repaired, new paint, junk removed and scrubbed clean. We had the first wedding reception of this year there a couple of weeks ago and their decorations, artistic flair and set-up was outstanding. I am obtaining some pictures for us to use to help promote the rental facility to show what it can look like.
Two new Big Screen TV's were provided through the donation and generosity of the Men's Auxiliary and we thank them very much. The electronic installation was handled by Jesse Atkins, which is no easy feat with our wiring system.
In process plan is an upgrade to the canteen's cash register system that will provide additional capabilities in our inventory system and customer cashier receipts.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
May 17 Armed Forces Day Active Military Recognition- Our women's auxiliary is throwing a party on Saturday celebrating those that are serving this great country. There will be wings, baked beans, slaw, cake and we will have happy hour prices all day. For those active duty members, their 1st libation is on the house.
May 26 Memorial Weekend flag placement at Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Mathis Ferry, Mt. Pleasant. We will gather at 9AM and will be placing flags on the grave markers of the veterans buried at the cemetery.
June 7 Fish Fry from 6 to 8 PM. $8 a plate or all you can eat for $12.
Please support these events and spread the word. The fund raisers are very important to the "well being" of our post and the special events in support of our military and veterans are the backbone of the VFW.
SAD NEWS:
Our condolences are with our comrade Buzzy Bramble who unexpectedly lost his father this week. Wayne Bramble was on his way to move permanently to this area and many were looking forward to seeing him again at our post and enjoying his company. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends that are grieving this lose.
THIS N THAT'S:
T-shirts and hats due in stock this weekend, May 17th. Suggest you get them early cuz I have had a lot of people asking about them.
A BIG thank you to the Charleston Air Force Base Honor Guard crew that donated there time and efforts on April 24 to provide a good "deep cleaning" of our post from top to bottom.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the Men's and Women's Auxiliary's for their support and valued contributions, not only in money, but the time, effort and diligence they give to this post and the VFW.
The newsletters primary means of delivery will be via emails as I have over 100 names on my list now and growing fast. I will put them out at least every 2 months, but, I plan to produce them whenever events warrant so that information is "flowed down to the troops There is a sign up sheet on the post wall for people to provide their email addresses to me. Also, if you know of someone who wants to be on my emaling list, you can forward it to myself at rmyers.post3137@yahoo.com or at chardaking@netzero.net. Hard copies will be available at the post canteen on the front table.
I thank all of you for your support and I look forward to an exciting year. If anyone has any questions, suggestions, ideas please let me know- this is your post and your input is important and needed!
May God bless our troops and, especially, watch over those who are currently in harms way, protecting our freedom from all enemies.
Richard Myers
Commander
