VFW POST 3137
THE POST ON THE COAST
Newsletter 2008-02 June 17, 2008
Comrades and friends of the Post 3137, Isle of Palms, South Carolina, as I noted in last month's newsletter, I will put these out at least every 2 months or whenever events warrant. Well, not a lot of "events" but, I have been asked if I could get one out monthly for info to the troops. So, I will do my best not to bore y'all to death this month.
MEDICARE OPTIONS ASSISTANCE:
The National VFW has formed a partnership with Humana/Pinnacle Financial Services to provide the most up-to-date information to help our members make informed choices on long term care, Medicare Advantage and Part D insurance programs. I have had a meeting with the agent assigned to our area and they will provide to us the assistance needed for those facing the many decisions regarding Medicare Programs for persons eligible and especially, those that are facing that "golden age" of eligibility in the next year or two. The various programs, health care carriers, plans, costs etc. are daunting and this service will save one many hours, - days of investigating/searching out what will be best for them.
Members and/or family members can contact me directly if they are interest in this valuable guidance. If there are sufficient numbers, they will set up a session at the Post on a Saturday/Sunday AM and will provide coffee and donuts.
THANKS FROM 401ST CA BATTALION:
The Post received a nice Thank You email from the CO of Headquarters Company, 401st Civil Affairs Battalion in Afghanistan, Cpt. Boes, for our contributions and that they will use the funds toward their homecoming celebration soon at Ft. Bragg. This was/is posted at the Post and, if anyone would like a personal copy, please advise. NOTE, we are planning on some of our members being there for their homecoming. I will let you know when that date is finalized.
FOOTBALL SEASON UPON US:
Not that far off 1st Gamecock game is Thursday August 28th and we are starting the wheels moving toward having a Tailgate Party for their games. We will show all of their games, through pay for view if needed, and will get up a group of "volunteers" to coordinate having side dishes, snacks, etc. provided by members. The Post will provide the HEAVY grub, such as Sticky Finger Wings, and other items on a rotating basis, such as sub sandwiches, chicken etc. where we can squeeze out those VFW special discounts! I will keep you updated in the next letter as to what other "brilliant ideas" are developed for the 3 F Season, Food, Fun & Football.
REMEMBRANCE:
It was noted in the prior letter of the untimely passing of Wayne Bramble and a remembrance get together was held last month at the Post. Good friends, food and memories were had by all and we want to wish the Bramble family our prayers Wayne was sent on his way in good fashion.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
June 22 (this Sunday) is Friends of the Post Appreciation Day. We will have free hot dogs and all the fixins. Bring your family and friends for a day of sun and fun on the beach. This is being sponsored by our excellent Women's Auxiliary so you know it will be "done right" it is also a chance to obtain your raffle tickets for the Fun & Sun Gift Package located behind the bar drawing will be held July 4th so don't miss out.
July 4th Plans are in the works and a flyer will be going out soon, but, as always, the Post IS the place to enjoy the IOP fireworks show and to be able to relax afterward while the mob tries to exit the island.
August 23 The Post's annual Luau and BBQ will be held with the dinner, band, dancing and great summertime entertainment occurring. Save this date more info will follow.
Every Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 8. Wednesday night is Spaghetti, PJ's outstanding pasta dinner includes salad and bread for $8 and on Fridays is our Burn Your Own Steak Night with baked potato and salad for only $12 and if you have seen the new & improved steaks (PJ calls them "roasts") you know what a deal this is!
THIS N THAT'S:
Thanks for those that worked the Fish Fry on the 7th didn't know it was a "sauna" affair huh? Again thanks to ALL! Also want to pass on thanks to Jesse Atkins for getting the latest big screen TV on the wall. If he keeps up being our wireman, he may want a 401k plan or something. Received some great WWII vintage airplane pictures for our walls, a gift from Mike Page at the Hungryneck Antique Mall and we appreciate his generosity!
Suggestion Box has been "suggested" and, in this day of emails, thought that this would be the best way to do that. One can still remain anonymous as I know the names of very few addresses and one can send it from another inbox if they desire. It is our desire to make this Post YOUR Post and we want any, all, questions, concerns, complaints, ideas, thoughts
Suggestion Continued:
brought up. We want to improve the Post, the canteen, its membership and our service to the membership. Can't promise we will go forward with them, but, be assured it will be read, taken seriously (if intended to be serious!) and a response will follow. EVERYTHING is fair game, even telling me where to go, but be advised you will fall in line behind my ex-wives for that.
No Shirt Rule Change Back as I noted above, can't say all suggestions will work out. The change to allow shirts for those getting bar service or restroom use, well, let's just say it didn't work out. Shirts are required at all times inside the canteen and I apologize to those ladies who will now have to go for a stroll outside when the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Army or Marine hunks hit our deck.
IOP Smoking Ordinance Update as of yesterday it is still in the Public Safety Committee agenda and will not be brought before the City Council this month. Word is that it barely survived the last meeting and may not get out of the committee at all. Will keep you updated as the rumors leak out.
We ask that God watch over all of our troops, our members, their families, and all veterans, especially those that have been disabled while performing their duties of great sacrifice to maintain our freedom and precious way of life.
Richard Myers
Commander
